Bookjacket for Three Lives, 1947
Three Lives contains three novellas, each centered on the life of a different woman. It was Gertrude Stein's first published book, funded by Stein herself in 1909 while her partner, Alice Toklas, prepared the proofs. The book later became one of Stein's most widely read works, leading to this New Directions edition. Alvin Lustig's cover depicts three female figures floating in a field of color, visually uniting the collection's three stories.
